Varieties of 1851 Copper Pennies

    

Date:  Style 1

1 - Has a good wide base foot 

8 - Large open circular/oval inner area

 

5 - Top bar has curved oval bottom.

     Open space between top bar & 

     bulge & large open area within bulge

     not completely circular rounded end tip

1 - As per 1st 1

Date:  Style 1A

1 - As Style 1 (wide base foot)

8 - As Style 1 but smaller circular inner

    area (could be due to coin wear with

    the 8 having been flattened

5  - Top bar as per Style 1 but down

      bar goes further down and smaller

      inner circle & rounded end tip

1 - As Style 1 (wide base foot)

Date:  Style 1B

1 - As Style 1A but has a narrow base foot

          as per all of Style 2 

8 - As Style 1A - Small inner circle area

5 - As Style 1 & 1A - for top bar & space

          below. Down bar as  1A.

         Open circle area as per 1. Rounded

         end tip as per 1A.

1 - As Style 1A but has a narrow base foot 

          as per all of Style 2

Date: Style 1C

1 - As Style 1B - Has a narrow foot 

8 - As Style 1B - Small inner circle area   

5 - As Style 1B  -Top bar & space below.

        Down bar as 1A. Open circle area 

        as per 1. Rounded end tip as per 1A.

      *On this example 5 appears double

       struck. Tilts backwards slightly & is

       now to the right of the doubled tooth.

1 -  As Style 1A but has a narrow base

           foot as per all of Style 2

Date:  Style 2 

Date  Style 2A

1 - Has a narrow foot

     1 is over gap/tooth

8 - Small oval inner area 

5 - Narrow, with very little space

     between top bar & bulge

     Narrow bulge, as well with

     very narrow inner space

     The 5 - tilts backwards slightly

1 - As per 1st 1 (over tooth)

 

 

 

1 - Has a narrow foot (as style 2)

     1 is over gap between 2 teeth

8 - Small oval inner area (as style 2)

5 - Narrow inner areas (as style 2)

     The bulge of the 5 appears

     very slightly thicker than style 2

     Also with very narrow inner space

     The 5 - is upright

1 - Last 1 has a thin I under the 1 

     showing at top & bottom of the

     digit (the under I has no foot)

     Over gap between 2 teeth

Date: Style 2B  (All numerals doubled)

Date  Style 2C

1 - Has a narrow foot 

     Doubling to left of top digit

8 - Small oval inner are

     Doubling to left of top digit

     Digit (8) over tooth/gap

5 - The base of the 5 is closer to the

     8 & is upright - Doubling to left of

     top digit - over gap

1 - Has a narrow foot (as style 2A)

     Doubling to left of top digit

1 - Has a narrow foot (as style 2A)

     Doubling to left of 1

8 - Small oval inner are

     Doubling to left of top digit

     (8) over gap between 2 teeth

5 Is upright - doubling to left of

      top digit - over tooth

 

1 - Last 1 has a thin I under the 1 

     showing at top & bottom of the

     digit (the under I has no foot)

     Over gap between 2 teeth

 

I have based Styles on the 5's.

Style 1 etc. - The 5 has a distinctive top bar with curved oval bottom with a good gap to the bulge.

Style 2 etc. - The 5 top bar is curved and runs into the down bar with small gap to the bulge.

 

Seen so far:

 

Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 1    =  2

Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 1A  =  2

Type 1 (far colon dots)   -  Date Style 2    =  4

 

Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 1B  = 1

Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 1C  = 1

Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2    = 2

Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2A  = 3

Type 3 (near colon dots) -  Date Style 2B  = 1

 

N.B. The Style 1 section was re-written and updated on the 19 Jan. 2018.

 

I will be very pleased to hear from anyone that can show that they have different examples.

 

**I have also been advised that many of the obverses on these coins have a repaired E in DEI.

The foot of the E had been broken off. A tiny bump also appears above the top upstroke of the E !?

Note also that the E is out of alignment and tilts backwards slightly.

 

  

 

This doubled or repaired E has been seen paired with Date style 2B (I.F. 30/11/07)
