1746 Maundy 3d - Obverse

1746 Maundy 3d - Reverse

Date: 1746 - 6 over 3

1746 Maundy 3d. Obv. Very slightly poor metal mix - resulting in dark hair-line just below

                          eye onto nose (3 mm).

                          Rev.  Date: 6 over 3.

Grade:  Choice EF+ (or even pAS) with very light tone. Lovely coin.

1746 3d - date

Top arrow points to where the

(broken) tip of the 6 should be

The lower arrow points to where

part of the 3 arm is.

See next picture

1746 3d - date

Dots have been added to

show where the position of

the 3 in the 1743 die was.

It is probably that the 6

is over a 3 (1743 die)

1746 3d - date

Dots have been added to

show where the (broken)

tail of the 6 would have been.

I have also erased the part of

the back of the 3 that now

makes up the new 6 'tail'

1746 Maundy 3d - The above pictures are to show my conclusions on what has occurred with this date.

One reference book concludes that the 6 could be over a 5. I discount this theory as

there was no 1745 Maundy 3d coins made so where would the 5 come from ?

My scans show how the 3 could be the under date. 1743 was the last date prior to

1746 that any Maundy coins were made. So using up 1743 dies would be logical.

The top 'tail' of the 6 was broken or weakly struck. Either it is the back of the 3

that is the new 'tail of the 6 or a punch was used to add a 'bit' from the circular

part of the "O" to the back of the 3 !!

One would think that there should be a 1746 3d with the 'upright' tail to the 6

but so far it appears that ALL 1746 3ds are as per the above !?
