1568 Threepence - obv.

1568 Threepence - rev.

1568 Threepence - Date: 8 over X !?

Or inverted 8 - as 8's normally have flat top

1568 Threepence - "Normal 68"

(Several images on Google)

(All show the same style of 68)

1568 - Date: 8 over 7

Same X and semi-circle at top to make the 8

A slightly better 8 but what a mess over the 7 !

1568 Elizabeth I  Threepence - 3rd issue - Tall bust

Date: This is a very unusual variety of this strange "8".

I consider that the 8 on my example is made up of an x and a semi-circular top.

             * For a long time the 'normal 68'  was considered to be an overdate of 8 over 7

that now appears incorrect as virtually every example generally found  is with

the flat top 8 and the broken diagonal at 7 & 8 o'clock.

A possible reason for the normal flat top 8 is that if  the top of the 8 had been

rounded it would have extended into the toothed border above.

The coin is good round and appears to be unclipped.   Axis:  ↑ ↑

It is possible that coin has been in the ground, possibly a clay environment, at one time !
