1679 Maundy 4d. The F of FRA looks like an E - to read ERA. However, that would be the wrong

assumption for this 'error' strike and the reasons are given below.

So what is the F of FRA in this variety ?

The 'E' is the wrong

shape for genuine E

used at that time.

The correct shape for

an 'E' - note the kick

out to the front on

the foot.

Could the variety be F over I -

to the left side of the F ?

Or could the E be over & H - as mistake

from a 'H'IB repair ?

My feeling are that it is that the F of FRA is over an H !  An Interesting variety and having handled

over 30 x 1679 4ds - this is the only example I have seen of this hard to explain oddity !
