1994 Penny (1st decimal issue) struck with an inverted reverse.
Since 1825 the British penny has been stuck in what is known as 'medal' alignment meaning that when the obverse of the coin is placed upright and then turned sideways the reverse too would be upright - as per the pictures above. However, it appears that an employee at the Royal Mint in 1994, on a particular day, made an error in setting up the dies and struck the penny coin with the reverse inverted as shown below.
At present, only 1 example of a 2011 inverted reverse penny is known.
