                         BP 1886 Aa                                                 BP 1886 A

BP 1886 Aa - No breast plate                   * Normal - with breast plate (slightly weakly) & (1887)

I have been sent a scan of an 1886 penny where Britannia appears to be without her elaborate (central) breast plate. (Picture from R.F. - 9 January 2007)

With help from collector's and penny specialist looking at various coins from 1883 to 1887 it has been judged that it is wear to the die (Reverse r).

On some examples from 1883 to1886 it has been noted that the wear has become more progressive.

On a few examples of 1886 pennies the breast plate disappears all together.

*This is not true of all 1886's - suggesting that several dies were also in use - from sharp to worn !

The 'no breast plate' type could be one of the last coins produced by this particular die prior to its retirement.

As from 1887 the worn dies has been discarded and the breast plate once again becomes sharp.

(Unless someone finds a 'no breast plate' example !?).
