Crown 1845 A - Large date - plain tail 4 - 7 ½  teeth from below 1 to centre of the 5

Crown 1845 B - Small (narrower) date - plain tail 4 - 6 ½ teeth from below 1 to centre of the 5

There are a few slight differences in the numerals

* The 1 has a longer top left serif (in the smaller date)

   The 8 is similar except it has a slightly smaller top inner-circle (in the smaller date)

   The 4  is similar except that the foot serifs are virtually non existent (in the smaller date)

   The 5 is slightly smaller and more squat - the top bar is longer and curves up to a point, the back bar is more upright and the lower circle is more rounded

Crown 1845 C -  Semi or slight slant up tail 4 - 7 ¾ / 8 teeth from below 1 to centre of the 5

Also noted on this example - Deformed 8 & part filled in 5.

The 1 has a short top bar

The 8 has a slightly deformed look

The 5 is slightly in-filled

Crown 1845 D - Semi or slight slant up tail 4 - 8 teeth from below 1 to centre of the 5

Crown 1845 E - Full slant up tail to 4  (sent in by R.B. March 2010)

The 1 has a short top bar

The 4 has a fully extended slant up tail - note that the top tip appears chopped (or weak)

          The tail of the 4 looks slightly triangular.

         Large numerals. (7 teeth wide)

Crown 1845 F - Full slant up tail to 4  (sent in by R.B. August 2012)

As per 1845 E

The 1 has a short top bar

The 4 has a fully extended slant up tail - note that the top tip appears chopped (or weak)

         The slant up part of the tail looks like a right angle triangle !

The 5 has a die flaw/over-date extending from the tip of the top of the rounded tail (8 o'clock) at an angle up to the top bar of the 5 (12 o'clock).

Now is that just a die flaw or a clumsy attempt of using the edge of a 4 in the wrong place, at slightly the wrong angle - as a repair ???

Large numerals. (Also 7 teeth wide)

Crown 1845 G - Full slant up tail to 4

As per 1845 E & F

The 1 has a short top bar

The 8 is slightly mis-formed

The 4 has a fully extended slant up tail - note that the top tip appears chopped (or weak)

         The slant up part of the tail looks completely different to the triangular tail of the CR 1845 F

The 5 is also slightly mis-formed. Possibly double struck.

         The top right of the bulge is indented and the tail of the bulge is joined to back down stroke.

Large date - (7 ½ wide). The 5 is over a gap between teeth. Type E & F the 5 is over a tooth.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In over 25 examples I have examined only ONE example has had the small date. It therefore appears to be a rarer type than the larger date.
Different serif endings to the tail of the 4.
Plain end tail
full top to 4
1845 A/B
Semi slant up tail
full top to 4
1845 C/D
Full slant up tail
Tail is as per a
right angle triangle
1845 E/F
Full slant up tail
Tail is different
to 1845 E/F
1845 G
It is possible that the plain tail 4 is a worn tail but it seems unlikely as most of the examples
I have seen or had have been with the very plain end tail to the 4.
The semi slant up tail to the 4 die (1845 C/D) looks as if the top tip at the end is broken !
My thanks to R.B. who saw my website and sent me the picture of an example of a
full slant up tail example. The Full slant up tail to the 4 appears to be the scarcer variety.
My example of 1845 G has a different slant up tail end to the 1845 E/F examples.
