Varieties for the 1852 Florin
FL 1852 A - Obv. Shows the normal 1852 die made for 1852. Note the level where the 'full stop' is - This example has the 'full stop' on the baseline, rather than above. The stop after the 2nd i appears as if the 'Foot is resting on the ball' Note that the first i is above the baseline. FL 1852 B - Obv. Shows the normal 1852 die made for 1852. Note the level where the 'full stop' is - Above and to the right of the tail of the italic i. The stop after the 2nd i appears as if the 'Foot is kicking the ball' These 2 obverses have been listed as separate dies due to their differences.
FL 1852 C - shows where an extra digit had been added to the original 1851 die. A 2nd i has been added. Note that the last i tilts forward slightly and is out of alignment with the 1st i. The top of the last i is now just passed the centre of the trefoil - whereas on the normal 1852 die the i it touches the centre of the trefoil. The 'full stop' after the 2nd i is in line with the foot of the curled up tail of the i. Whereas on the normal 1852 die the 'full stop' is above - I have shown this with an arrow - where the 'full stop' would have been on the original 1851 die (MDCCCLI.) - a very small bit, of the full stop, is just sticking out to the right of the 2nd leg - just above where it curls up. FL 1852 D - shows a 1852 normal die but the 2nd i is in fact double struck over the i. The top of 2nd i, is as per FL 1852 A which touches the centre of the trefoil. On this example there is a small piece of the doubled front of the leg of the 2nd i resulting in a double tail .Compare the position of the 'full stop' of this variety with that of FL 1852 A and one will see that the 'full stop' is in a very similar position - i.e the tail or 'foot' of the i is kicking a ball ! FL 1852 E - Rev. n over inverted n in florin - 3 examples of this variety have been seen and listed by Mal Lewendon in the latest English Silver Coinage by Spink.
