BP 1897 A - Date type A 10 to 10 1/2 teeth from 1 to 7 depending on the angle that the 7 is put in (some appear slightly more upright than others !). It also depends if measured from the leg of the 7 - upright or along the leg - slanting ! * On some examples, as per this example, the 9 is of a slightly larger font size (compare with type B) ** Also seen with 7 slightly closer to 9
The slight difference between date: type A and B - is the gap size - between the 9 and the 7 On date type A: The gap between the numerals appears equidistant On date type B: The gap between the 9 and the 7 is larger than on type A
BP 1897 Aa - Date type B 10 1/2 teeth from 1 to 7
BP 1897 C - with Reverse 'x' - I find the easiest way to distinguish this variety is not by the sea as it is only fractionally higher but by the 'P' of Penny which points to a gap between two teeth where as with Reverse 'w' the 'P' of Penny points to a tooth. Rare reverse type
