We have obtained an extremely rare 1853 (mdcccliii) Crown with SEPTIMO edge.

This coin is normally only know in proof condition and catalogues at £11,750 (Spink, Coins of England, 2011)

This is the first and only example I know of that is in this lower grade and could be unique in grade for this rare date.

The mintage is thought to be 460 (how many still exist ?). Examples in proof condition are rarely offered for sale and are highly prized.

Spink lists this coin as having a die axis of ↑↑. However, this example has a die axis of ↑↓ similar to the die axis for the 1847 Gothic Crown.

I have no way of knowing if this is a rarer type that the ↑↑ axis type ?!

The person selling this coin thought that his grandfather might have had it as a "good luck" pocket piece and that could be the reason for its condition now !?
