1853 Obverses

FL 1853 Obv. 1 ?

1853  Obv. 2 - Close iii's

1853 Obv. 3 - Normal spaced iii's

1853 Obv. 4  -last i of date leans forward

1853 - Obv. 1 - STOP after date mdcccliii.  I have been sent an image from a Victorian

Gothic florin specialist of the ONLY pictured example of this so called

variety. My opinion is that it is not a genuine 'stop' but that it is a flaw

that just happens to have occurred just below the last i of the date !

This is an extremely elusive variety to find !

1853 - Obv. 2  - First i of date touching leaf, Second i to V, Third i touching leaf - Close iii's.

Minor differences noted in thickness and height of i's and noted that

seen with 2nd or 3rd i seen below the base line. There could be more !

1853 - Obv. 3 - First i of date below leaf, Second i between leaf & V, Third i to right of leaf

Also seen with different thickness & height of i's. Also with 3rd i lower

and one example with 1st & 3rd i lower. The 2nd appears to be higher.

1853 - Obv. 4 - First i of date, to right of leaf, Second i touching leaf, Third i between V & leaf

Only one example seen, so far !

1853 Reverses

1853  Rev. A - one tenth

1853 Rev. B - Rev. onc tenth

1853 Rev. B - ONC (broken e in ONE)

 1853 Rev. B - onc tenth

1853 Rev. A  - The normal reverse of the florin from 1852 to 1887 (Gothic type)  -

Reads ONE FLORIN -  ONE TENTH OF A POUND.

1853 Rev. B -  ERROR reverse has the E or 'e' of one as a 'c' or unfinished 'e' instead !

Reads ONE FLORIN - ONC TENTH OF A POUND

This variety is unlisted in any reference books.

Several collectors have known of its existence for some time.

This reverse error is not just a ONE off (or even a ONC off !)

We have noted that this error reverse die has been used starting in

"possibly" 1852 and then used in most years up to and including 1860.

A colleague believes that he has seen ONE example of the very first date 1852

with this variety but that was only as a picture of a coin sold on Ebay in 2004.

He was unable to purchase the coin and so far another example has alluded him.

So if anyone has an example of an 1852 with a ONC reverse I would be interested

to hear about or possibly even buy it if it were for sale.

The other date that is proving elusive is 1859 with the error "onc" and again

I would be pleased to see or hear of an example.

This error reverse die "ONC"seems to have had a very long life and makes

for an interesting search to now find examples.

The 1853 seems to be the easiest dates to find at present but it would be

interesting to make a list of these errors known so a more accurate list of

                           known coins can be compiled.
