1864 Florin (mdccclxiv) - Die number 19 w w Interesting coin as it shows the reason why a new variety of this date coin was listed by Mal Lewendon in the latest book "English Silver Coinage - since 1649" Normal: BRIT: (Full colon dots) & the new variety BRIT. (Full stop only). This I believe explains why. The top colon dot has become clogged on the striking die (incuse) and this has resulted in the top colon appearing worn on the struck coin. This example shows a very slight trace of that "worn" top colon dot ! Die number 19 has been one of the elusive missing numbers from the "known die number register". The known examples with BRIT. (Full stop) are 20, 22 & 30. Note also that there is a die crack on the obverse running from the edge through the M of the date (3 o'clock)
