1887 - 1892 (Jubilee head) Obverse & Reverse Varieties
Obverse varieties
1887 Halfcrown - Jubilee head (2nd issue - 1st type) - Obverse 1 Two strong lines beneath the crown to the ermine seat The shape of the ermine above her head is partly upright 3 ¾ to 4 pearls in centre arch - from cross to top orb (The lowest pearl is slightly cut at the base)
1887 Halfcrown - Jubilee head (2nd issue - 2nd type) - Obverse 2 ONE strong line and a thin line both above and below the strong line beneath the crown to ermine seat The shape of the ermine above her head is wavy and horizontal rather than upright Only 3 pearls in centre arch - from cross to top orb The front cross is angled more downward and forward than on (type 1)
1889 Halfcrown - Jubilee head (2nd issue - 3rd type) - Obverse 3 Similar to obverse (1st type) with Two strong lines beneath the crown to ermine. But like obverse (type 2) there are only 3 pearls in centre arch - from cross to top orb The front cross is angled more downward and forward than on (type 1) - as per (type 2) The orb at the top of the crown slightly smaller than on (type 1 & type 2) The ermine seat at the front end of the crown extends higher up to the two lines The shape of the ermine is slightly wavy as per (type 2) but different The fleur de lis are slightly taller than (type 1 or type 2)
There are probably other difference but these are the most obvious
Reverse Varieties
HC 1887 - 1889 Reverse A - (1) Above the base of the Crown and the jewelled collar there are 4 thin threads from the edge left, under a Cross, to a fleur de lis, to under the central Cross, to under another fleur de lis, and lastly to to the Cross at the right edge. Pointed to via RED arrows, on the Crown. (2) The Cross at the centre of the base has straight sides and top with curved edges inwards towards the centre jewel. (3) Above the Cross, at the centre of the base, there are 3 large pearls with a gap below the orb at the top of the Crown. Note also the formation of the arches, etc. either side of the pearls. The top pearl aligns with the lower tip of the arch. Pointed to via RED arrows. (4) The Chain of the garter has 1½ circular links at the left, the ½ just above and to the left and 1 link to the right side. There is a gap between them and the above arches. Pointed to via RED arrows. There are other minor differences. These are the main ones noted. HC 1889 Reverse B - (1) Above the base of the Crown and the jewelled collar there are 4 slightly thicker threads from the edge left, under a Cross, to a fleur de lis, to under the central Cross, to under another fleur de lis, and lastly to to the Cross at the right edge. Pointed to via RED arrows, on the Crown. (2) The Cross at the centre of the base has straight sides on all 3 edges and is triangular in shape with the point towards the centre jewel. (3) Above the Cross, at the centre of the base, there are 3 slightly smaller pearls that are very close to the orb at the top of the Crown. Note also the formation of the arches, etc. either side of the pearls and as to how different they are to the arches on Reverse A. Now, the base of the top pearl aligns the tips of the top of the side arch. Pointed to via RED arrows. (4) The Chain of the garter is similar in style to that of Reverse A but now has only 1 circular link at the left and 1 to the right side. As per Reverse A there is a gap between them and the above arches Pointed to via RED arrows There are other minor differences. These are the main ones noted.
HC 1889 - 1892 Reverse C - (1) Above the base of the Crown and the jewelled collar there are FOUR thicker threads from the edge left, under a Cross, to a fleur de lis, to under the central Cross, to under another fleur de lis, and lastly to to the Cross at the right edge. Pointed to via RED arrows, on the Crown. Similar to Reverse B. (2) The Cross at the centre of the base has straight sides on all 3 edges and is triangular in shape with the point towards the centre jewel. Similar to Reverse B (3) Above the Cross, at the centre of the base, there are 3 large pearls that are very close to the orb at the top of the Crown. Note also the formation of the arches, etc. either side of the pearls and as to how different they are to the arches on reverse A & B. Also, now, the top pearl aligns with the top of the side arch and the centre pearl is centred to the lower tip of the arch. Pointed to via RED arrows. (4) The Chain of the garter has only 1 circular link at the left and 1 to the right side. The chain now nearly touches the above arches. Pointed to via RED arrows There are other minor differences. These are the main ones noted.
