This is an 1836 halfcrown that the date is probably1836 with the 6 over another 6 !

However, some people consider that it is an 1836 over 5.

There are a few points of interest.

The 6 of this  date is flat topped - whereas the "usual" 6 for this date is 'rounded' top !

I have shown an example of a normal 'rounded top' 6 - below.

So this repair is of a 'rounded-top' 6 beneath the original 'flat-top' 6.

Several collectors and cataloguers have listed this variety as 6 over 5 - I believe this to be incorrect !

My reasons for considering that the 6 is not over a 5 are for the following:-

The 5 used in 1835  does not have a flat top - it has an indented flat top - which is different to the top of this 6.

Look at the example below of an 1835 and one will notice that the rounded front ball of the 5 is thicker than that of the 1836 over 6 and that the inner hollowed area is larger on this 6 than that on the 5.

I consider that shows that it cannot be a 6 over a 5 !

What is different is about this 6 is that the 6 font used is different from the normal 6 font used.

Plus there is another 6 under-stuck below - possibly as a repair or to convert it to become

like the normal round topped 6 - but that failed !

If anyone has an example of a GENUINE 6 over 5 I would be very interested in seeing it.
