                                    1920 Halfcrown - Reverse A

Rev. A - The lower rim of the garter around the shield just above the F of HALF and the 19 of the date is depicted by a raised line.  Also just above the C of CROWN where the end of the garter loops under the garter there is a very small gap where they meet.

                                   1920 Halfcrown - Reverse B

Rev. B - (September 2009) For the first time in approximately 15 years I have been able to find an example of what Davies calls Reverse B ! I never listed it before or even looked hard for this reverse type as I was not even sure that it existed. Plus Davies's description in his book was never that clear to me and his pictures certainly did not help me for identification.

However, having eventually discovered a 1920 halfcrown with what appears to be his description.

I have added my pictures and description.

The lower rim of the garter around the shield just above the F of HALF and the 19 of the date is now flat - there is NO raised line along the edge.  Also just above the C (of CROWN), to the right of the date, where the end of the garter lops under the garter there appears to be a slightly large gap (than reverse A) where they meet.

I have added several arrows to each picture to show the areas mentioned.

There appears to be no other alteration between reverse A & B.

Having only discovered 1 example of this reverse - so far, I consider that it is probably fairly scarce or even rare.

On worn coins I believe it will be impossible to determine reverse A from reverse B as the raise edge line get worn down to a plain edge and the small gap above the C (of CROWN), to the right of the date, gets filled.  The two reverses will look virtually the same !

For 1921 Davies lists a new reverse - Reverse C - this as far as I can see is extremely similar to what I believe is the reverse that Davies lists as Reverse B

So far, I note only ONE difference between reverse B & C and that is the small pocket above the C (of CROWN), to the right of the date, is virtually closed as per reverse A.

So for reverse B (1920) compare the lower rim of the garter around the shield just above the F of HALF and the 19 of the date to that area on a 1921 halfcrown (reverse C) and that flat outer garter is what you are looking for.
