COIN CLUB |
In Peter J. Davies excellent book The British Silver Coins - since 1816 He lists this very difficult to spot variety. It is only when one examines the two coins together can one spot the difference in size of the border rims. The letter in the legend on both coins line up identically to the border teeth so it is impossible to determine the difference in that way. If one measures from the top of the Cross to the base of the Coat of Arms there is only a half a millimetre difference. Not a lot ! and impossible to determine by eye alone but there is just that small size difference that makes it a different die. Peter found that this rim and design size difference occurs for both the English & Scottish shilling types. He found that the Scottish type was many times rarer than the English type. In all my years of looking I have only ever had 2 examples of the English type and 100s of the normal thin rim issue. So far I have found none of the Scottish type. I consider the English type of what I now call Reverse B1 as rare. I hope that my examples for comparison help you in finding examples of either the English or Scottish type or both.
