ST 1844 A - Small 44. Note distance from leaf to last 4 and that the base

of the 44's are well above the top of the back arch of the 3

and above the base line with the '18' as compared to the

                      Large date - See ST 1844 B

ST 1844 Ay - Metal flaw (indent)

ST 1844 Ay - Metal flaw (indent)

*I have now found 3 examples of this small metal flaw (indent) and they are all

paired with the double stuck 1st 8 of the date. It is possible that a small piece of

grit or other foreign body got itself trapped on the obverse die and that is what

has caused this small indent. These are listed as ST 1844 Ay.

However, I have also found one example where  there is NO flaw on Victoria's neck.

This I will list as ST 1844Ax

ST 1844 Ax & Ay - Small 44 and the 1st 8 of the date is double struck - top right side.

ST 1844 Ax & Ay - Small 44 - The 1st 8 of the date is double struck - top right side.

ST 1844 B - Large 44. Note distance from leaf to last 4 and that the base

of the 44's are now in line with the top of the back arch of the 3

                    * In this example the last 4 has been double struck.

* Due to the rarity or scarceness of this date there are not many examples

around to determine which of the two date varieties is the commoner.

Looking at my past sales records, since I have noticed this difference in

the date sizes, I have had 4 x small date and 3 x larger date examples.

Therefore at present it seems that both have approximately the same

scarcity value.
