1858 Obverse die changes As the bust of Victoria remains unaltered and there are only very minor changes to the lettering in the legend they can be listed as sub-varieties to Obverse die 1. Due to the 'unusual' legend repairs to some of the lettering, with different fonts, (C) in 1857 and now (C & G) 1858 it has become difficult to allocate different numbers or letters to these obverse variations. I have decided to retain the Davies allocation of Obverse 1 and to add extra letters to that obverse classification for the minor die changes to the legend.
1857 - Obv. 1 (normal) 1857 - Obv. 1A, 1B & 1C (new sub-varieties) 1858 - Obv. 1 (Unseen) 1858 - Obv. 1A (1st used in 1857) 1858 - Obv. 1D & 1E (new sub-variety)
From 1838 to early 1857 the Victorian Obverse 1 die remained unchanged. However, after that minor repairs of the lettering in the legend appear. All of the 1856; 1857 & 1858 3d's listed are basically repairs to obverse die 1 rather than 'new' dies. A new die was made for use from 1859 to 1868. See 1857 Obverse varieties for some of these changes from C1; C2 & C3 ST1838 to ST 1856 - Obv. 1 - (F:D: type - A to Ap) The C in VICTORIA is simple without an upper serif at the top as per shown on the above picture ST 1856 Ac. ST 1857 A - Obv. 1 - (F:D: type - A to Ap) The C in VICTORIA is simple without an upper serif at the top as per shown on the above picture ST 1856 Ac. ST 1857 C1 - Obv. 1A (F:D: type - Ac) Starting with this obverse the bottom left leg of the first 'I' in VICTORIA appears to be broken and looks like an inverted Arabic 1. However, the 'C' is now of a different style of font and probably 1 size larger than the normal 'C'. The difference to the normal 'C' is that this 'C' has a serif top as appose to the normal that has NO serif ! See pictures ST 1857 C1 & ST 1857 C3 for details. ST 1857 C2 - Obv. 1B (F:D: type - Ac) Now this obverse has what appears to be a poor repair to the first 'I' of VICTORIA as there is a tiny bit of another 'I' below the original 'I'. However, on this obverse the 'C' is the normal 'C' but appears to be struck slightly higher than the normal 'C' should be !? See pictures ST 1857 C1 & ST 1857 C3 for details. ST 1857 C3 - Obv. 1C (F:D: type - Ac) On this obverse the "I" of VICTORIA has had a correct repair However, there is still the tiny bit of the test strike of another 'I' below the original 'I'. The "C" is now of a different style of font and probably 1 size larger than the normal 'C'. The difference to the normal 'C' is that this 'C' has a serif top as appose to the normal that has NO serif ! As seen with on obverse ST 1857 C1. See pictures ST 1857 C1 & ST 1857 C3 for details. ST 1858 A - I have left ST 1858 A blank as I have not found an example with the C in VICTORIA without an upper serif at the top. If one should appear it will be listed as such. ST 1858 Bc - Obv. 1A (F:D: type - Ac) The C in VICTORIA now has an upper serif at the top and is probably 1 size font larger as per ST 1857 C1; C3 & ST 1858 Bc. The G in D: G: and in REGINA have a short centre cross-bar.
ST 1858 Db - Obv. 1A (F:D: type - Ab) There was some very careless repair work with the B over-struck the R at the end of BRITANNIAR (B) (rather that at the beginning). The R of REGINA has also been over-struck with a B !! This is as per the altered obv. die 1A (type ST 1858 B) The C in VICTORIA now has an upper serif at the top. The G in D: G: and in REGINA have a short centre cross-bar. I will be happy to add a better picture when one becomes available. ST 1858 Ec - Obv. 1D (F:D: type - Ac) The C in VICTORIA now has an upper serif at the top and is probably 1 size font larger as per ST 1857 C1; C3 & ST 1858 Bc. In VICTORIA the C is over C and the O is broken top & bottom & double struck The G in D: G: and in REGINA have a long centre cross-bar. ST 1858 Fc - Obv. 1E (F:D: type - Ac) The C in VICTORIA now has an upper serif at the top and is probably 1 size font larger as per ST 1857 C1; C3 & ST 1858 Bc. The G in D: G: and in REGINA have a long centre cross-bar.
