COIN CLUB | 1859 Date variations Trying to estimate date size and positional differences for 1859 has been difficult as so many have been found. Some of the differences are so small that without other examples to compare it is difficult to determine what is what ! I have recorded just some of the variations of size and positions I have found. I would suggest that none of these different variations shown below have any baring on the prices and are listed for reference purpose only.
ST 1859 At - Large 5 The top bar of the 5 is flattish. There is a large front bulge. The bulge is oblong. The 9 is slightly smaller in size than some of the other 9's It is at the same height as the 5 with same base line. ST 1859 Ea - Smaller 5. The top bar of the 5 is flattish. There is a smallish front bulge. The bulge is oblong. The 9 is a slightly large font size to that used for ST 1859 At. The 9 is now below the base line but aligned at the top. ST 1859 Ay - Medium 5. The top bar curves up very slightly. There is a medium size front bulge and the bulge is slightly more circular. The 9 is much larger and thicker than previous 9's of this date. * The 8 of this date type is double struck - see below. ST 1859 Ce - Medium 5. The top bar curves up very slightly. There is a smallish front bulge and the 'hole' inside is larger. The bulge is more circular. The font size of the 5 is probably 1 size smaller than the larger 5. The 5 is possibly fractionally above the base line. The 9 is larger and thicker than previous 9's of this date. Very similar to the 9 of ST 1859 Ay. 1859 Some over-date repairs
ST 1859 A - Large 9. 9 over 9. A bit of the test punch of a 9 shows just below the curved foot of the 9. ST 1859 Av - Large 59. 9 over 9. A bit of the test punch of the back of a 9 shows just above and to the right. ST 1859 Aw - Large 59. 59 over 59. The 5 - It was fairly heavy 'test punch' with much of the under 5 showing - just below. The 9 - not such a heavy test punch but parts show below the curved foot and within the inner part of the top bulge.
ST 1859 Ay - The 8 of 18 is double struck. The 'new' 8 is slightly lower - below the base line Part of the original (under-date still shows above and is to the left).
