Further D: G: & F: D: Colon dot anomalies

With Obverse 2 from 1861 to 1867

1861 - D: G: & F: D:

ST 1861 W - Obv.  D: G: ST 1861 X - Obv. D. G. ST 1861 Y - Obv.  D  G

ST 1861 W - Obv. F. D.

ST 1861 X - Obv. F. D.

ST 1861 Y - Obv. F. D.

ST 1861 W - Obv. D: G: (Full colon dots).

                            F. D. (Only the Top colon dots are clear). However, by tilting the coin

at various angles one can just make out very faint lower colon dots !

ST 1861 X - Obv.  D. G. (Only the bottom colon dots are clear)

                            F. D(Only the bottom colon dot is clear after F.)

(Only the top colon dot is clear after D.) However, by tilting the

coin at various angles one can just make out very faint lower colon dots !

ST 1861 Y - Obv.  D. G. (NO colon dots appear to show !)

                            F. D(Only the top colon dot is clear after F. D.) However, by tilting the

coin at various angles one can just make out a very faint colon dot after F

* This sort of wear on the colon dots for DG & FD is unusual to see even in lower grade

  coins ! I have not experience this for other 1838 to 1861 silver 3d. I have other 1861 3ds

in low grade but the colons dots are clearer. Very faint traces can be found for some of

the missing dots but only by tilting the coin and examining very closely.

These are the examples that I have found for 1861 there might well be others.

These missing colon dots can also be found on 1862; 1863; 1864 & 1865 3ds in much

higher grades - even in coins up to EF or better ! I have not found any for 1866 - so far !

As I examine and add the 3ds from 1862 to 1865 if I find any other missing colon dots

variations I will add them to this page for continuity.

ST 1862 X - Obv. D. G. ST 1863 X - Obv. D. G. ST 1864 X - Obv. D. G.

ST 1862 X - Obv. F. D.

ST 1863 X - Obv. F. D.

ST 1864 X - Obv. F. D.

ST 1862 X - Obv.  D. G. (Only the bottom colon dots are clear)

                            F. D(Only the bottom colon dot is clear after F.)

(Only the top colon dot is clear after D.) However, by tilting the

coin at various angles one can just make out very faint lower colon dots !

* This example is a much clear better grade example to that of ST 1861 X - which

confirm that this Obverse die was used for both dates.

ST 1863 X - Obv.  D. G. (Only the bottom colon dots are clear)

The G has a double serif at the top

                            F. D(Only the bottom colon dot is clear after F.)

(Only the top colon dot is clear after D.) However, by tilting the

coin at various angles one can just make out very faint lower colon dots !

The F is double struck as is the D but no attempt to correct the colon error.

ST 1864 X - Obv.  D. G. (Only the bottom colon dots are clear)

The D is Double struck. The G has a double serif at the top (double struck !)

                            F. D(Only the bottom colon dot is clear after F.)

(Only the top colon dot is clear after D.

The D is Double struck. Plus there is an additional colon dot - above and

to the left of the F - just below the border teeth - RED arrow.

                            F. D(Only the bottom colon dot is clear after F.)

(Only the top colon dot is clear after D.

The D is partly open at the top - just off centre and in need of repair !
