1865 Date variations
ST 1865 A - Type 1 - The top bar of the 5 is very slightly concave and has a pointed end. The bar is fairly thin. There is a large space between the top bar and the the top of the lower bulge. The back of the 5 is upright. The top of the bulge is flattish. The inside space of the bulge is open with a large gap between the back of the tail and the up-right bar. The tail has a rounded end. ST 1865 A - Type 1A - This is a worn example of probably date type 1. Dates and lettering become thicker when the coin becomes worn. However, there does appear to be a slight different to the top bar of the 5 as compared to type 1. The top bar appears to be flattish and the end tip instead of pointed appears to have a slightly domed top end ! Otherwise the remainder of the coin is a thicker version of date type 1. * Until a good quality version of this date is found with a domed end top bar this example will be listed as a worn example of date type 1. ST 1865 B - Type 2 - The top bar of the 5 is flat and has a pointed end. The top bar is very much thicker than the example of date type 1. There is now very little space between the top bar and the top of the lower bulge. They nearly converge. The back bar is as per type 1 - upright. The top of the bulge is more rounded than type 1 but as per type 1 there is a large space within the bulge. The tail in now closer to the upright back bar, with very little gap and has a bulbous end. ST 1865 B - Type 2A - This is a worn example of probably date type 2. Dates and lettering become thicker when the coin becomes worn. ST 1865 C - Type 3 - The top bar of the 5 is slightly curved, points upwards and has a slightly rounded pointed end. There is a very large space between the top bar and the top of the lower bulge. The back bar is very slightly tilted forward rather than upright. The top of the lower bulge is flattish as per type 1. There is a large space within the bulge. There a large gap between the tail and the top bar. The tail has an even larger bulbous end. ST 1865 C - Type 3A - This is a worn example of probably date type 3. Dates and lettering become thicker when the coin becomes worn. As I have at present two examples of each of date variation (type 1 & 1A) count as two. I have checked with other images of 1865 silver 3d on the internet and I have found 4 images of ST 1865C (Type 3); 2 of ST 1865 A (Type 1) & 1 of ST 1865 B (Type 2) which means that the 3 reverse date dies were used roughly equally ! Therefore all appear equally easy to obtain.
