Missing nostril

 

ST1873 B - Mouth

Top lip as per normal -

slightly rounded

ST 1873 B - Obv. 3  Similar to ST 1873 A except that Victoria's nose has the

                   missing nostril. Victoria's top lip is rounded as per all obverse 3 types.

                   Obv.  There are traces of die clashing. There are several die cracks

                   1. A very thin die crack through last R of BRITANNIAR at 1 o'clock. 2 mm.

                   2. Thin die crack up to and then left on Victoria's truncated neck 

                       at 6 o'clock. 3 mm + 3 mm.

                   3. Strong die crack through O of VICTORIA towards Victoria's

                      lower lip at 8 o'clock. 4 mm

                   4. Thin die crack between the colon dots after G: of D: G: and

                       the B of BRITANNIAR at 11 o'clock. 2 mm

                   5. Very thin die crack  down through the 1st A of BRITANNIAR

                       at 12 o'clock. 2 mm

                   Rev. A trace of a couple of Victoria's ghosted head from die clashing.

                   Grade:  Bright.    EF+

* Examples with the 'part' missing nostril were first noted ONLY for 1873. It now 

  appears that that obverse die was used later up to 1878. As there are far fewer

   examples found with the use of this die they can be considered scarce. It is

  difficult to estimate the scarcity with this die as probably no one has looked 

  before to see if this 1873 obverse die type continued after 1873 !
