1876 Variation to nose (As per 1873)
ST 1876 A - Obv. Victoria's nose is as per normal for obverse 3 with a nostril showing ST 1876 B - Obv. The same nose as per ST 1873 B in that the nostril hole is missing.* * The lost of the nostril hole is possibly due to the die having become worn in this area. Having examined over 10 1876 silver 3d, recently, I have found only one example of ST 1876 B and that example is only in Fair - Fine grade. Date variety: 6 over 5 ! Davies, in his book "British Silver Coins" mentions the date variety 1876 - 6 over 5. The latest edition of "English Silver Coinage" by M. Bull (Spink) had added this variety to its list but I suspect it has only because it was listed in the Davies book ! I have looked out for this variety over the last 20 plus years and I have never seen an example that would be acceptable as the 6 over 5 variety. Nor have I seen a single example offered for sale in auction during that time. I am not sure if this variety exists but I would very much like to be proved wrong if someone could show me an example or even a convincing picture of this variety. For this reason I cannot list this variety as 'confirmed' ! The 1876 Threepence is more difficult to find than the catalogue suggest. The mintage of 1,834,389 is half that of the more common 1873,74 & 75 issues. Lower grade examples are available but it is the higher grades examples that are proving more difficult to find.
