1889 Varieties 3 Obverse variations
Obverse 5 - The Crown on top of Victoria's head has an orb and small cross at the top. The cross has 3 small pellets or dots around it, at left, top & right of the cross. There are 7 small pearls on the top of the left side of the Crown. There are 3 other crosses at the base, 2 part showing at either side & 1 central. Between the 3 Crowns are 2 Fleur de Lis with thin side leaves. There are TWO lines around the base of the Crown. The right foot of the last A of GRATIA virtually touches the 5 & 6 pearl. The T & leg of R point directly to a tooth on VICTORIA. The last A of GRATIA points directly to a tooth. The B of BRITT points directly to a tooth and the I to the left side of a tooth. [Listed as Davies Obv. 1] Obverse 6 - The Crown on top of Victoria's head has an orb and small cross at the top. The cross has two lines (or spurs) instead of dots to either side of the Crown. There is one pellet or dot still at the top of the Crown. There are now only 6 small pearls on the top of the left side of the Crown. There are 3 other crosses at the base, 2 part showing at either side & 1 central. Between the 3 Crowns are 2 Fleur de Lis with thin side leaves. There are TWO lines around the base of the crown. The right foot of the last A of GRATIA virtually touches the 4 & 5 pearl. The T & leg of R point directly to a tooth on VICTORIA. The last A of GRATIA points directly to a tooth. The B of BRITT points directly to a tooth and the I to the left side of a tooth. [Listed as Davies Obv. 2] Obverse 7 - The Crown on top of Victoria's head has an orb and small cross at the top. The cross has 3 small pellets or dots around it, at left, top & right of the cross. The left and right side pellets or dots now appear to be attached to stalks. The orb below the cross is now larger and rounder. There are 6 small pearls on the left side of the Crown. There are 3 other crosses at the base, 2 part showing at either side & 1 central. Between the 3 crowns are 2 Fleur de Lis with thicker side leaves than on Obv. 5 or 6. There is now only ONE line around the base of the Crown. The Crown appears slightly smaller as if it has been squeezed and is now narrower and slightly more upright than the Crown used for Obv. 5 & 6. The right foot of the last A of GRATIA is now above the 4th pearl. The T & leg of R point to a gap between two teeth on VICTORIA. The last A of GRATIA point to a gap between two teeth. The B & I of BRITT point to a gap between two teeth. This obverse has slightly more border teeth than Obv. 5 & 6. [Listed as Davies Obv. 3] 2 Reverse variations
Reverse C - Wreath around the edge, Crowned large 3 central, Date split either side of 3. The cross patée towards the base of the Crown is plain as are the two showing at either side of the Crown. The wavy design below the crosses and fleur de lis is thin. [Listed as Davies Rev. A] Reverse D - Wreath around the edge, Crowned large 3 central, Date split either side of 3. The cross patée towards the base of the Crown now has an engraved border with the cross as do the two showing at either side of the Crown. The wavy design below the crosses and fleur de lis is slightly taller and sharper. [Listed as Davies Rev. B]
