Sixpences 1864 - Die Numbers

SX 1864 - date type A:

Small numerals &

the 4 has a plain tail end

SX 1864 - date type B

Larger numerals &

the 4 has a 'slant-up' tail end

SX 1864 - date type C

Small numerals &

the 4 has a 'slant-up' tail end

The 1864 sixpences with the plain tail end 4, [small numerals]. (type A) have been seen up to die no. 12

type A is the scarcer type of the two issues.

The 1864 sixpences with the 'slant-up' tail end 4, [larger numerals], (type B) have been seen from

Die no. 13 to 41 [near all numerals in-between have been found].

Die no. 58 has been noted in the new "English Silver Coinage"  - but not confirmed !

No other dies numbers from 42 to 57 have been ever seen or found !

In the Baldwin's of St. James's auction 27 March 2017, Lot. 201 an example of an 1864 sixpence

with die no. 57 was listed. However, this was incorrect and the die number was mis-identified.

It was found to be die no. 37 (as I purchased this coin) - The picture is shown below.

I would now suspect that the 1864 coin listed with die no. 58 was probably with die no. 38.

* A couple of the 'slant-up' tail end 4 have been noted with small numerals. i.e. die No. 26.

Davies lists die no. 41 as also being with small numerals. As I don't have an example of die no. 41

to hand I cannot confirm this sighting but if recorded by Davies it is more than likely correct.

There could well be other die numbers with small numerals as yet un-recorded.

Die no. 26 has small well spaced numerals - note the different style of numerals used for the

larger issue. I suspect that examples with small numerals for this date are rare.

There are examples with wide dates (26), normal spacing dates & narrow dates (28).

The tail end of the 4 to Die no. 26 & 37 is more "triangular - wedge shaped" to 'slant up'

I show the below die numbers - just for the record

SX 1864 A - Die No. 4

SX 1864 A - Die No. 5

SX 1864 A - Die No. 8
