SX 1871 A - No die Number * - Rare Grade: Choice brilliant pAS * Between 1871 and 1883 attempts were made to modernise the machinery sited at the Royal Mint at Tower Hill. Lever presses were introduced to replace the ageing Bolton screw presses. It has been suggested that to distinguish those coins struck with the newer 'Lever press', the die number was omitted on purpose. Being a test of the new machines also suggests that a limited amount of coins were struck, possibly with a single reverse die. As there is a possible 55 die numbers for this year and only one reverse die with NO die number it suggests that there is a ratio of 55 to 1 of finding an 1871 sixpence - WITHOUT a die number. However there are 9 die number still unseen or unaccounted for which bring the ratio down to 46 to 1. Therefore, still extremely hard to find especially in Choice grade. Sixpences without die numbers are know for 1877 and 1879.
