1874 Sixpence - 2 obverse dies & 2 different 4 fonts in date
2 Different obverse dies were used in 1874. Obverse 3 appears to have been used from die no. 1 to die no. 26 but not exclusively. The D of DEI points to a gap between two teeth, as does the E. The I point just to the right of a tooth. The R of REG points to a gap between two teeth & the E to a tooth. Obverse 4 has been seen used, as early as, with die no. 10. Also with die no. 23. The D of DEI points to a tooth, as does the E. The I points to the left of a tooth. The R of REG points to a tooth & the E to a gap between two teeth. From die no. 27 up to die no. 60 all appear to be with obverse 4 unless someone finds differently. This makes the number of coins produced by both OBVERSE dies approximately equal. Therefore, neither obverse die type is scarce. 2 different 4 fonts in date
All of the die numbers between no. 1 to 44 use the T-bar or 'crosslet' 4 in the date. As yet I am not certain what style of 4 was used for die no. 46 to die no. 48. The first recorded number that I have found with the plain end-tail 4 is die no. 49 to die no.60. The plain end-tail 4 is considerably scarcer than the T-bar or crosslet 4.
