1879 Sixpence - 2 obverse & 2 reverse dies
2 Different obverse dies were used in 1879. Obverse 4 was used with die no. 1 to die no. 21 and is also know WITHOUT a die no. The E of DEI points to a tooth. The I of GRATIA points to a gap between two teeth. Has more border teeth than obverse 5. Obverse 5 has only been found with 1879 sixpences WITHOUT a die no. The E of DEI points to a gap between two teeth. The I of GRATIA points to a tooth. Has less border teeth than obverse 4. Several other letters of VICTORIA & BRITANNIAR pointing to teeth or gaps and can be used in determining the differences between the obverses 4 & 5. 1879 Sixpence - 2 reverse dies
Reverse C The Crown is slightly further from the border teeth with a gap between the cross on the orb, at the top, and the border teeth. This reverse also has small slightly rounded pointed border teeth. There are also slightly teeth more than reverse D. The wreath leaves, on the left side, have the centre mid-rib shown by incuse lines to each side of the centre mid-rib. At 8 o'clock there are 4 leaves, in two pairs, close to the border teeth. The leaves are of similar size. Compare the lower pair to the smaller leaves now on reverse D. Reverse D The Crown is slightly closer to the border teeth and the cross on the orb, at the top, and the border teeth. On many examples the cross is very weakly struck and unclear. This reverse has slightly more squared teeth. There are less border teeth than reverse C. The wreath leaves, on the left side, have the centre mid-rib shown as a single raised line. At 8 o'clock there are 4 leaves, in two pairs, close to the border teeth. The lower pair are small in size compared the larger leaves in reverse C. 1879 is know with the following combination of dies: 4 + C - with die numbers 1 to 21 (Scarce - Rare; As only 11 die number found, so far) 4 + C - WITHOUT die numbers (Scarcer) 4 + D - without die numbers (Normal) 5 + D - without die numbers (Rare)
