Reverse E appears to be a unique reverse die for just 1882 as it does not appear to have been used in either 1881 or 1883. No examples of reverse D used for 1882 have been seen. This reverse E also has many more border teeth than reverse D. Several of the wreath leaves on the left side have been elongated and now touch the border teeth. * In 1882 it was reported that operations of coinage would be suspended at the Royal Mint from 1st February and that the remainder of the year would be devoted to the reconstruction of the buildings and the renewal of the machinery. The production of Pennies, halfpennies and farthings for that year were made by Ralph Heaton & sons. The Royal Mint once back in production produced a limited amount of silver coins with small mintages. All silver coins of this date are scarce or rare. No gold coins or florins were made - dated 1882 (Royal Mint London issue). Shillings were the most produced at over 1 & half million. The sixpences the least produced at 759,809.
