Sixpences 1890 - possibly 4 reverse dies ?
SX 1889 G or H - with reverse H - The leaves to the right side of the wreath have been re-cut. especially the lower first 3 leaves leaning towards the border teeth. The lowest 1st leaf is slightly larger - note that the end point is now very close to a border tooth in comparison to the other previous reverses. The 2nd lower leaf, just above - note instead of having 3 distinct rounded ends now only has 2 ! The 2nd & 3rd (end) have been joined together. The 3rd lower leaf is now larger and the gap between the 2nd & 3rd leaf is very much closer. The stalk that connects the 3rd leaf now sits much closer to the branch and there is not the gap as seen on earlier reverses. SX 1890 A or B - with reverse E - See SX 1889 E or F - with reverse E for details. Only one example found seen and only in Fair grade. SX 1890 C or D - with reverse F - Listed in case an example is found - for continuity ! SX 1890 E oe F - with reverse G - Listed in case an example is found - for continuity ! SX 1890 G or H - with reverse H - As shown above (SX 1889 G or H). Davies lists this reverse but as yet I don't have an example (D. 1166) therefore I have given it reference for when an example is known to me ! SX 1890 J or K - with reverse J - Listed in case an example is found - for continuity ! SX 1890 L or M - with reverse K - I am not sure how this reverse got used as in my opinion it is very poor engraving. This reverse has no similarity to anything that has gone before. Starting with the branch that is a forked Y - which connects to nothing. The leaf stalk to the lower two leafs is also not connected. The two (lower) leafs are slightly different in shape to any design previously. The branch and stalk above are also not connect to anything - floating. The 3rd (lower) leaf is slightly smaller than previously and there is a larger gap between the 2nd & 3rd (lower) leafs. The branch above is also not connected to anything below it. Very similar poor engraving to reverse J - seen for 1889 ! SX 1890 N or P - with reverse L - Again the leaves to the right side of the wreath have been re-cut. I will list the differences I have found to reverse G the closest in similarity. Starting with the stalk to the lower leaf which curves to the right - this is now slightly longer and lays closer to the branch - leaving very little gap between stalk & branch. The 1st (lower) leaf, below the 2nd (lower) leaf has a much less defined triple ridge and more of the base of that leaf is in contact with the branch. The top side of the 2nd (lower) leaf has again 3 distinct ridges and the one at the base of the leaf is larger and covers part of the branch. The branch above is now thicker & less shows due to the re-cut of that 2nd (lower) leaf. The top edge of the 3rd (lower) leaf has also been re-cut with stronger defined 3 ridges.
As I have very few examples of 1890 sixpences to examine I cannot be sure if these are the only reverse varieties to be found for this year. It would be extremely unlikely with just 5 coins I could have found 3 different reverse types ! The same possibly for 1888 or 1889. It all depends if anyone else wants to continue the research, in the future. With all of the strange re-cuts to the lower right section of the wreath from 1888 to 1890 on wonders if this was to let apprentice engravers a chance to show what they could do ! As who but a coin researcher would ever bother looking for such small changes. The public would never have given the changes and re-cuts a second glance. After those few years of experimenting and re-cutting, etc. in 1891 the Royal Mint settled in using reverse H for the follow 3 years - 1891 to 1893.
