SX 1787 no Hearts

SX 1787 - with 6 Hearts

The Hearts are in top

right half of shield

4 above Lion & 2 below

SX 1787 - with 5 Hearts

The Hearts are in top

right half of shield

3 above Lion & 2 below

SX 1787 - with 4 Hearts

 The Hearts are in top

right half of shield

2 above Lion & 2 below

Note: It has been established that the 'NO Hearts' type shield, on the reverse of the coin,

was the first to be used and the 'Hearts' were added to later dies.

6 Hearts is normal

I have recorded 3 different amounts of 'Hearts' in the the top right half of the shield.

I thought that they might have been different dies but have now seen over 25 examples

I am fairly sure that they are not different dies - just 'filled in' dies as I now have an

example that has 3 & half Hearts above the lion with the 3 to the left & the

half above the lion's head.

So the hearts on the top row that that got filled in from right to left !

Over 95% of examples that I have seen or had are with the full 4 hearts above the lion.

The other examples are 1 of 3.5. 1 of 3 & 1 of just 2

It is difficult to determine at this stage if examples with missing hearts should command

a higher price just because they are scarcer than those with all 6 hearts intact !

Anyhow something new to look out for.

Date variations:

Date: Type 1 - Plain 7

Date Type 2 - 7 has a serif

both  above & below top bar

(fairly solid & clear)

Date Type 3 - 7 has a thinner serif

that is below top bar only

(slightly smaller numerals !)

There are several variations in the date but the more obvious one is with the 7 as shown above.

Type 1: The 'Plain 7' is found with both the 'NO Hearts' & the 'Hearts' types and appears to be

             the commoner type.

Type 2: The '7 with serif both sides of the top bar'. I have found, so far, only with the 'NO Hearts' type

but at a 30% ratio (about 1 in 3), to the plain 7.

Type 3: This type of 'serif 7' I have found only with 'Hearts' type and at a 15% ratio (about 1 per 6),

             to the plain 7.

I have also noted that the 8's also appear to be in different styles also. The majority appear to have thick body, as an S running from top right to bottom left. The example of my Type 1 also appears to have the 8 'upside down' as the smaller circle at a the bottom with the larger at the top. On most of the other examples I have looked at the circles appear to be either of similar size or the smaller circle at the top. On Type 3, the 8 is smaller and of a different font altogether.

All the numerals in Type 3 are slightly smaller than the other two types. The top of the Arabic 1 curls downwards.

At this stage I have decided only to list the different types of 7 so as not to over complicate matters.
