1843 Reverses

GR 1843 A - Rev. A   GR 1843 A - Rev. A

GR 1843 B - Rev. B

GR 1843 B - Rev. B

1843 - No examples of the 'broken' or open C have been found for this date

However, Reverse B has been left available if an example is found.

1843 Date varieties

All of the 1843 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position.

The position of the 43 can vary slightly.

Date: The top of the 4 is pointed and has a T bar tail.

GR 1843 - Type a - Date (wide) - 3.5 teeth

GR 1843 -- Type b - Date (average) - 3 teeth

GR 1843 -- Type c - date (narrow)

GR 1843 - Type d -- Larger 3

GR 1843 - Type d - 3

Groat 1843 - Date: Type a - The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

The 4 appears to be a slightly smaller font than the 18

The 3 smaller than Type d.

All of the numerals are on the same baseline.

The distance between the 4 & 3 is from a gap (between border teeth)

                                  and 3 & half teeth.

Groat 1843 - Date: Type b -The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

The 4 has been seen - small as per Type a & c but has also been seen

large as per Type d. As this example appears to shows.

The 3 is similar size to Type c which slightly larger than Type a.

The 3 is now just slightly below the baseline.

The distance between the 4 & 3 is from a gap (between border teeth)

and 3 teeth - gap to gap.

Groat 1843 - Date: Type c - The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

The 4 appears to be a slightly smaller font than the 18, as per Type a

and now appears to be slightly above the base line>

The 3 appears to be similar in size to Type b and is below the baseline.

The distance between the 4 & 3 is from a gap (between border teeth)

                                   and 2 & half teeth.

Groat 1843 - Date: Type d - The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

The 18 appears larger than numerals used for Type a, b & c

The 4 appears to be a slightly smaller font than the 18 & 3

The 3 appears to be larger than the font used for Type a, b & c.

The base of the 3 is below the base line of the other numerals.

                                  * The 3 appears to have been stuck over a slightly smaller 3 ?!

** At present it is impossible to determine which or if any of these variations is rarer than another.

Also the examples I have are not of the best quality. There could well be other variations.

*** IN ESC (2015 edition) a variety "4 over 5" has been listed. There is NO picture and I would

suspect that this variety has been listed in error as where would the 5 have come from !!??

If the 4 were over another numeral it would more likely be a 3.

I would be pleased to see an example should one appear !
