1848 Reverse varieties

GR 1848 -Rev. A   PENCE  (Normal C)

GR 1848 -Rev. A (Normal C)

GR 1848 - Rev. B   PENCE  (With broken C)

GR 1848-Rev. B (Open C)

GR 1848 - Rev. C   PENCE (Thicker Font)

GR 1848 - Rev. C

GR 1848 - Rev. A - All of the letters in PENCE are normal but fine in style.

The C in PENCE is virtually circular except for the gap a 3 o'clock

The tail or end section of the C is on the fine side.

GR 1848 - Rev. B - All of the letters in PENCE are as Rev. A except that the end section (tail) of the C

is now broken and there is a large gap between 3 & 4 o'clock.

You will notice that the broken lower limb of the C now hangs further down.

GR 1848 - Rev. C - All of the letters in PENCE appear to be enlarged except for the P of PENCE.

The E's are thicker and the ends have a more triangular look.

On this example the last E is double struck. It is difficult at this stage to know if this

normal on ever example of this die or there is a die with out the doubling !?

The N appears to be thicker and slightly larger the left foot is wider than previously.

The C is again virtually circular with a gap at 3 o'clock..

The tail or end section is now much thicker than previously seen on Rev. A.

* It is difficult to know if Rev. C was a repair to the normal die (Rev. A) with thicker font letters as

on the first E one can clearly see that there is a small E beneath it. It cannot be a repair to

(Rev. B) as the under hanging lower part of the C would be clearly visible.

An interesting  observation and a very difficult one to spot unless one has the other reverses

  to compare it to.

1848 Obverse variety

GR 1848 D - G over G sideway in D: G:

GR 1848 D - Obv: The G over G sideways in D: G:

                                * So far only see with "Date" type A (Smaller 4)

Normally obverse varieties would be classified BEFORE reverse varieties.

However, on this rare occasion I have listed this obverse variety after the reverse variety

due to fact that reverse varieties A & B have been used from 1838 to 1846 and so as not

to confuse matter I have kept the reverse varieties with the same letter A & B and as a

new "C" font variety has been found it has been listed as Reverse type C for continuity.

1848 Date varieties

All of the 1848 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position.

The position of the 48 can vary slightly as can the size of the font.

Date: The top of the 4 is pointed and has a slant-up tail.

GR 1848 - date  Type a (Smaller 4)

8's double struck

GR 1848 - Date: Type a -The 4 is slightly smaller. The 4 has a slant-up tail.

The 8's & 4 have been seen both plain and double struck.

This example is with the G over G sideways variety.

The alignment of the 4 is ABOVE the 'base line'.

GR 1848 - date Type b (Smaller 48)

The '848' are double struck

GR 1848 - Date: Type a - Smaller 48.  As above but with the '848' double struck

GR 1848 - Date: Type b (Large 4)

2nd. 8 above the base line

GR 1848 - Date: Type b - The 4 is larger. The 4 has a slant-up tail.

                              * Sometimes found with the last 8 double struck.

The '184' are on the 'base line'. The last 8 is entered higher.

GR 1848 - Date: Type d - 8 over 6

GR 1848 - Date: Type d The last 8 is over a 6 - Always found with a large 4.

GR 1848 Date: Type e - 8 over 6

GR 1848 Ea

GR 1848 - Date: Type e The last 8 is over a 6

There is a small 'bit' or 'foreign body' just above and attached to the last 8.

What it is - is unknown ! The thought that it might have been part of a

misplace repair of a 1 is now thought to be unlikely.

The 'bit' on the top inside circle of the 8 is that of the top rounded end of the 6.

GR 1848 - Date: Type f  (8 over 6 or 6 over 8 !?)

GR 1848 - Date: Type f

8 over 6 or 6 over 8 !?

GR 1848 - Type f  (6 over 8)

  GR 1846 (6)

GR 1848 (8)

GR 1848 - Date: Type f Last 8 over a 6 or 6 over 8. Always with the Large 4.

This is an unusual over-date to identify as the usual protocol is for the date that

is upper most or is most prominent to be called the prime numeral over the other

                             numeral below.

In this case the 6 is just above the 8 but it is accepted that these coins were

struck in 1848 but the Royal Mint was using up remainder dies from 1846.

Normally the 8 is more heavily struck and covers the 6 and is more prominent.

However, in this case, the top of the 6 is above the 8. The back of the 6 is also

very clear and is above or at the same level as the left side of the 8.

The lower central circle in the 6 is more up-right and oval.

The lower central circle in the 8 is more circular than that of of the 8

The outer lower circle in the 6 is circular.

The outer lower circle of the 8 is horizontally more oval that the 6.

                             Also slightly wider.

RED ARROWS show the high points of the high points of the 6.

BLACK ARROWS show the edges and parts of the 8 beneath the 6.

WHITE DASH LINES show the edge lines of the 6.

                            Therefore my question is this variety 1846 6 over 8 ? *

                      Rather than 1848 8 over 6 !

However, as this particular over-date has always been referenced as

1848 over 6 - it is probably best left as such !

There are other 1846 dies that were over-printed with the 8 that are clearly

1848 over 6 as the 8 is above the 6. It is only this particular die with the die crack,

to the left side of the 6 that can questionably thought of as 1848 - with 6 over 8.

                             * Sometimes this variety is found with the last 8 double struck.

* This is similar to the argument of the 1847 Groat with 7 over 8 due to the fact that the 7 is

more prominent 8 when it is well known that that date variety was only ever made in 1848

but is listed as an 1847 Groat type.

GR 1848 Date: Type g - 8 over 7

GR 1848 - Date: Type g The last 8 is over a 7 - Always found with a small 4

NOT to be confused with the very rare 1847 over 8 variety where the 7

is more prominent that the 8 - See pictures for the 7 over 8 variety.

The 8 is just below the baseline.

GR 1848 Date: Type h - 8 over 8 over 7

GR 1848 Date: Type h -

8 over 8 over 7

GR 1848 Ch - Rev C - See above for details.  Large N & last E of PENCE double struck.

Date: Type h The last 8 is over a 7 - Appears always to be found with a small 48.

NOT to be confused with the very rare 1847 over 8 variety where the 7 is

more  prominent that the 8 - See pictures for the 7 over 8 variety

The 1st 8 is double struck. The Last 8 is also double struck and over a 7.

The 7 is the straight leg type (B) 7 - See pictures for the 7 over 8 variety

The 4 & 8 are above the baseline.

* If in future this date variety is found WITHOUT the E of PENCE being over struck

then the variety with the double struck E will become variety GR 1848 Ha

GR 1848  Date: Type j - 8 over 7

Groat 1848 - Date: Type j The last 8 is over a 7 - Always found with a small 4

NOT to be confused with the very rare 1847 over 8 variety where the 7 is

more prominent that the 8 - See pictures for the 7 over 8 variety

All of the numerals are double struck.

The leg of the 7 is below the base of both of the double struck 8's.

The 4 & 8 are above the baseline.

The 7 is Type A ending at 6 o'clock and is fractionally below the base line.

(This variety courtesy of Ruggero 17/8/2018)

There could well be other 8 over 7 varieties as the Royal Mint used up the 1847 dies.
