1838 - 1888 Groat Reverses

GR 1838 A - Rev. A

GR 1838 B - Rev. B

GR 1838 A - Rev. A - PENCE   GR 1838 A - Rev. A

GR 1838 Aa - Rev. Aa - PENCE (Part broken tip C)

GR 1838 B - Rev. Aa

GR 1838 B - Rev. B - PENCE (Broken tip C)

GR 1838 B - Rev. B

GR 1838 A - Rev. A - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font.

The C is well rounded with a small gap at 3 o'clock.

GR 1838 Aa - Rev. Aa - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C.

.                                     The C is braking up and just a thin finger of the lower circle is left. See Red arrow

GR 1838 B - Rev. B - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C.

.                                     The C is now broken and has a piece missing from 4 - 5 o'clock. *

This example has the C double stuck.

Other examples do NOT have the c double struck.

* Normally I don't think that rev. Aa & B reverse would be considered as a separate reverse as

there are no other changes to Britannia or the other lettering in the legend. Also Aa & B are

from the same 'original' A die - just with a letter break. But as the 'broken' C die was used for

at least 10 years after the break is seems worth listing as its own entry !

This 'broken' C was first noticed by me (Nov. 2021) when adding a few more 1848 Groats

to my website and this minor difference was noted. I decided that I should check backwards,

by date, to see if I there were any earlier dates with the 'broken' C. I was surprised to find that

I had  examples going as far back as  far as 1838 (the first official date of Victoria's coinage) !

As this broken "C" in PENCE reverse appear on dates 1838 to 1840 and 1846* to 1848

I felt that it needed to be considered as a separate reverse as this die was in use for more

   than one date.

After careful examination of the groats I have in stock from 1841 to 1845 I have not found

any example of the 'broken' C in PENCE type. That does not mean that there aren't any !

I have left reverse type B in case any are found in the future.

Having now examined my 1846 examples of the 'broken' C I am of the opinion that the 1846

reverse die is a different 'break' to that of 1838 to 1840 reverse B die. If that is the case then it

is possible that no examples of the 'broken' C reverse die will be found for 1841 to 1845 as

that damaged die was retired in 1840.

On examination of the 1836 to 1837 Groats (William IV) none appeared to have this 'broken' C

reverse. I then found an example of an 1838 Groat that had a partial break - listed as GR 1838 Aa

I feel that this might be the earliest date example of the part broken and broken "C" letter.

I have, as yet, not had a chance to examine all of my examples of  my Groats from 1849 - 1888

but if any of those later dates are found to have the 'broken' C reverse I shall report back and

  update this listing

** If any one has any dates from 1838 to 1888 that I have not listed with the 'broken' C (Rev. B)

I would be very please to hear from them. Also I feel that it is now unlikely that any examples

of this broken "C" will be found on any William IV 1836 & 1837 Groat due to possibly finding

a transition die with this break for 1838. But then anything is possible.
