An unusual Charles II Maundy Twopence ! Listed in the later edition of English Silver Coins from 1649 by Maurice Bull, 2015. Page 85 & 86 as Type C. I consider it to be a transition issue from the hammered to the machine or milled issue. Why is it unusual or different ? The legend of all hammered coins used the convention of a mintmark, followed by the legend (in this case CAROLVS.II, etc. starting at 1 o'clock, clockwise to 12 o'clock. Where as the new issue of machine or milled coinage the legend would start at 7 o'clock (no mintmark) and go clockwise around to 4 o'clock or beyond ! This coin however is clearly machine or milled but there is a mintmark (crown on both sides) and the legend starts at 1 o'clock - as per a hammered coin. Obv. Mintmark: Crown, CAROLVS. II: D: G: M: B: F: ET. H: REX The M & B are very poorly made. Rev. Mintmark: Crown, . CHRISTO. AVSPICE. REGNO. With regrets, the coin has a small hole (which seems to occur a great many times with these small Maundy coins !) Otherwise - Grade: Fine+
The above 3 coins are shown as examples of the 3 Charles II issues. How most Machine examples can be differentiated with the milled issue are shown on a separate page - click to view
