1921 - Reverse B and variety with smaller "2" !?

ST 1921 A - Rev. B

ST 1921 A  - Rev. B  - Top leaf stem is kinked

ST 1921 A - Rev. B - The Top leaf stem is slightly kinked as it emanates from the left

                                 stem of the acorn.

ST 1918 & 1920   - Rev. C - Top leaf stem is straighter -

                                  Shown for comparison

ST 1918 A - Rev. C - The Top leaf stem is straight. Very similar to Rev. A except that

the top left acorn stem comes off the leaf stem above the right

acorn stem and the acorn stem is much shorter.

Whereas on Rev. A the two acorn stems emanate at the same

point on the leaf stem and left acorn stem is longer than that on

                                 Rev. C.

As to why the Royal Mint decided to revert back to the previous reverse B after the

introduction of reverse C for a second time is unclear. I have examined several 100

1921 silver 3d I have not found a single coin with reverse C.

To see the difference between the reverse dies A, B & C.  See ST 1918 reverse dies

Davies in his book mentions the following variety:

1921 - with small '2'  Ref: 1937 (3 + B).

In over 10 or more years of looking I have examined 100s of 1921 silver 3ds and I have

never found a single example of this small '2' variety. As Davies does not show any

picture it is hard to imagine what this variety would look like. This variety has never to

my knowledge been listed on any dealers list or website nor listed in any auction.

ST 1921 A - normal "21"

ST 1921 B -

Smaller "2"

ST 1921 B -

Smaller "2"

My thanks to C.M. (Oct. 2025) for sending me an example of what

Davies probably considered  his - small '2' variety (D. 1937) to

take a scan of and to possibly show or explain how this variety

can be found if one did not have the larger / normal 21 to hand.

I regret but after careful examination I can find NO easy way for

any collector to spot this variety.

The gap at the top of the smaller '2' is smaller and more circular

than on the larger/normal '2' which appears to be slightly oval !

The base / foot is slightly shorter in length on the smaller  '2' than

on the larger / normal issue.

The distance between the 2 & the 1 might be slightly greater on

the smaller '2' variety. But the distance to the wreath of the '1'

appears to be about the same for both coins.

The '2' also appears to be in exactly the same place and position

in comparison to the back of the large 3 !

So I therefore suggest that unless one has an example of both

the large and small 1921 coins to hand for comparison it would

be very hard to tell which is which.

I cannot see this variety becoming widely collected of searched for.

I could be wrong (again !)
