1846 Reverses
GR 1846 A - Rev. A - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font. The C is well rounded with a small gap at 3 o'clock. Out of 12 examples of 1846 groats I have, as yet, only found 1 example with the 'un-broken' C ! All of the other examples are with the 'broken' more open neck C - as shown as GR 1846 B I therefore consider that the break to the C must have happened very early on and normal original dies with the 'closed' C must be scarce for 1846 ! GR 1838 Aa - Rev. Aa - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C. . The C is braking up and just a thin finger of the lower circle is left. See Red arrow. Shown for comparison with SX 1846 Aa GR 1846 Aa - Rev. Aa - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C. . The C from 6 to 3 o'clock has a thin finger indicating possibly the start of a small break in the future. Or, the C which has been double struck could possibly the partial repair with a different font C ! The last E has been double or triple struck. See Red arrow. I have only found one example of GR 1846 Aa GR 1846 B - Rev. B - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C. . The C is now broken or open - and has a piece missing from 4 - 5 o'clock. This C has been double struck and seems to be a slightly different font to the normal as it has a solid triangular top serif to the C. See Red arrow. 1846 Date varieties All of the 1846 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position. The position of the 46 can vary slightly as can the size of the font. Date: The top of the 4 is slightly flat and it has a slant-up tail. * Previously from 1840 to 1844 all of the 4's (bar 1 ?) had a T bar tail.
Groat 1846 A - Date: The top of the 4 is flat. The 4 has a slant-up tail.
