Date

All of the 1855 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position.

The position of the 55 can vary slightly. 9½ - 10 teeth normal. 9 teeth - narrow.

GR 1855 A - Date: Type a  (Normal date)

GR 1855 A - Date:  Type b (Narrow date)

GR 1855 A - Date: Type a  The Last 5 is slightly below the base line (on this example)

The 5's are of equal size and font

                       Date width is 9 ½ (9 teeth and 1 x ½ ) [Normal spaced width]

GR 1855 A - Date: Type b  The 5s are on the base line

The 5's are of equal size and font (possible the last 5 faint double strike !?)

                       Date width is  9 (8 teeth and 2 x ½ ) [Narrower date - 55 closer together]

GR 1855 A - Date: Type c (1st 5 over 5)

GR 1855 A - Date: Type d (2nd 5 over 5)

Groat 1855 A - Date: Type c  The 1st 5 is over a slightly lower 5 (Just the base showing)

The 5's are of equal size and font and slightly wider apart that 1855 A

It is possible that there might be the faint double striking of the 2nd 5

                           Date width is 10 teeth (9 teeth and 2 x ½ )

Groat 1855 A - Date: Type d  The  2nd 5 is over a slightly lower 5 (Just the base showing)

The 5's are of equal size and font size might be slightly larger as the 55s

are both below the base line.

                          Date width is 9 ½ (9 teeth and 1 x ½ ) [Normal spaced width]

GR 1855 A - Date Type e (2nd 5 over part 5)

GR 1855 g (both 5's over 5)

Groat 1855 A - Date: Type e  The  2nd 5 is over a slightly lower 5 with only part of the under 5

showing - with a gap in the centre

Both 5s are on the base line.

                           Date width is 9 ½ (9 teeth and 1 x ½ ) [Normal spaced width]

Groat 1855 A - Date: Type g  Both 5's are now double struck. Both with just a small part

showing below each of the 5's.

Both 5s are on the base line.

                           Date width is 9 ½ (9 teeth and 1 x ½ ) [Normal spaced width].

Date: 1855 with 5 over 3 !

Reason for this variety not to exist !

GR 1855 A - Date: Type c

GR 1855 A - Date: Type d

GR 1853 - Date Type A

I would suggest that there is no such variety as 1855 with 5 over 3 (whichever 5

it is thought to be over !).  Unless someone can show me a convincing example

as I have never come across such a variety nor did Davies.

If the 3 were over the 1st 5 then the rounded top and back would show -

As per the 1st issue 53 (Date: Type A - Probably in use until 1859).

Mistaken for a 5 over a repaired - as a double struck 1st 5 as per Date: Type c.

If the  were over the 2nd 5 then again the rounded top and rounded back would

show and it does not. Also that coin would have to have been struck over the

original 1853 reverse die and as one can see the style of the 5 is totally different.
