1857 Groats (proof)

1857 groats are Extremely Rare and according to Peter Davies the Obverse

was Type 3 as per the type used for the Victorian Threepence from 1866.

Therefore as the GR 1853 S it was probably not issued until 1866 or later.

The 5 for this Groat is of the same style as that used for GR 1853 S

Groat 1857 P - Obv. 3  There are now many more border teeth and Victoria's bust

                           is now slightly larger and in lower relief.

                           Her mouth is fuller and her nose are slightly more pronounced.

                           The back of the truncation is smoother and less sharp.

                           Victoria's hair now covers the top of her ear.

                           The first I of VICTORIA now points to a border tooth.

    * This obverse die was first introduced to the 3d series in 1866
