1862 Groats (proof) ALL 1862 groats are Extremely Rare
There are several different Obverse types Obverse 2 - with Plain edge ↑↑ (Medal alignment)
Groat 1862 P - Obv. 2 As per Obv. 1 but now the top of Victoria's e ear is now partly covered. As per the above image with the comparison with Obv. 1 The legend and everything else remains the same as per Obv. 1 except that there are now NO colon dots after D of F : D Rev. E Further changed has been made to the legend FOUR & PENCE FOUR The F of FOUR appears either to be an F over an F. One of the F's tilts backwards slightly. See GR 1862 R below for a better image. The upright leg appears to be slightly fatter than the norm. The U of the FOUR is unique in that it appears to be in reverse ! See the images and compare with the norm. See GR 1862 R. The solid left leg is now a solid right leg ! The thin right leg is now a thin left leg. Was a broken punch used ? As the ¾ height of the right thinedge of the solid left leg remains - but not the infill ! The R has a faint trace of having been double struck - as bits show below and slightly to the right. PENCE The P of PENCE is more solid in both leg and the front edge of the P. The P appears to be slightly out of alignment with the E - slightly lower. The E of PENCE is also more solid in the upright leg. On the 1st E - between the centre bar of the E the normally straight upright appears to be slightly convex (rounded slightly outward) ! ? Could this be due to the E being struck over another E !? The 2nd E does not appear to have this slight convex 'bit' and I am sure that both E's would have been struck from the same punch ! The length of the upright centre bar is much longer than normal. The centre bar of the N of PENCE is slightly thicker than normal. My example for comparison unfortunately has a double struck centre bar which now makes it the same size as the 'new' N. The C of PENCE has a slightly thicker back and the top serif is also different to the norm. See the images. Date: The '62' are struck above the baseline. The 8 has been double struck. It is amazing that for proof dies that there could be so many repairs and errors ! Obverse 2 - with Milled edge ↑↑ (Medal alignment)
Groat 1862 R - Obv. 2 As per Obv. 1 but now the top of Victoria's e ear is now partly covered. As per the above image with the comparison with Obv. 1 The legend and everything else remains the same as per Obv. 1 except that there only a stop after F. and a single top colon dot after D. of F. D. Rev. E Further changed has been made to the legend FOUR & PENCE FOUR The F of FOUR appears either to be an F over an F. One of the F's tilts backwards slightly. Obverse 3 - with Plain edge ↑↑ (Medal alignment)
Groat 1862 S - Obv. 3 - There are now many more border teeth than used for Obv. 2. The font letter are similar to those of Obv. 2 except that they are now slightly bolder. The A of VICTORIA is now closer to the D of D: G: and the B of BRITANNIAR is closer to the G: of D: G: The R of REGINA is also closer to the colon dots ater BRITANNIAR. The Colon dots after D: of F: D: no longer align with the back of Victoria's truncated neck, they are now slightly further under. The colon dots are now very strong and pronounced. Victoria's eye is fractionally larger and more pronounced. Victoria's nose is very slightly aquiline (very slight upward bulge !). Victoria's lip are bolder and her mouth is slightly more open. Victoria's neck now has a very slight bulge, just at the start of her neck. The front of her truncation is now rounded instead of being pointed. Victoria's face is very slightly fuller. Her hair is even more sharply defined and the top of her ear is still covered. Rev. E Exactly the same as all of images for GR 1862 P & GR 1862 R FOUR The F of FOUR appears either to be an F over an F. One of the F's tilts backwards slightly. See GR 1862 R below for a better image. F for his help in identifying the 1862 with obverse 3.
