1844 - No examples of the 'broken' or open C have been found for this date

           However, Reverse B has been left available if an example is found.

 

1844 Date varieties

All of the 1844 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position. 

The position of the 44 can vary slightly as can the size of the font.

Date: The top of the 4 is pointed and has a T bar tail.

   

GR 1844 - Type a - Date: (large 44)

GR 1844 - Type b - Date: (large 44)

GR 1844 - Type c - Date: (Smaller 44)

Groat 1844 - Date: Type a - The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

                       The 4 appears to be a slightly larger font than the 18. The tops are higher than the 18.

                       The distance between the two 4's is from a gap (between border teeth) and 3 & half teeth.

Groat 1844 - Date: Type b - The top of the 1st 4 is flat. The 4 has a T bar tail

                       The 4 appears to be a slightly larger font than the 18. The 2nd 4 is entered higher than the 1st 4.

                        Die flaw from edge through back of 1st flaw.

Groat 1844 - Date: Type c -The top of the 4 is pointed. The 4 has a T bar tail

                        The 4 is a smaller font. The T bar tail is also much smaller

                        The distance between the two 4's is from a gap (between border teeth) and 3 teeth - to gap.

* Not sure if one date type is scarcer than the other !?
