ST 1874 B - Obv. 3B

ST 1874 B -

nostril missing

ST 1874 B - Rev. B

Date: Type A

ST 1874 B - Obv. 3    Similar to ST 1873 B - with missing nostril *. However, on this

example there is a trace of nostril just above Victoria's

upper lip - the line across to complete is missing.

Die crack at 12 o'clock between AN of BRITANNIAR to

just touch the top of Victoria's head

                                 Another small die crack 11 o'clock between D: & G: 2 mm.

Strong hair with very little wear but the fiels is slightly scuffed

Rev. B  Trace of Victoria's ghosted head.

                       Date:  Type A  Slant-up tail.

Trace of Victoria's ghosted head - through date.

Grade:  Obv. Pale.  Rev. Bright.    EF?

* Examples with the 'part' missing nostril were first noted ONLY for 1873.

This example is the only 1874 3d I have noticed so far to have the 'part'

missing nostril with either style of date type of over 20 examples examined.

It now  appears that that obverse die was used later up to 1878. As there are

far fewer  examples found with the use of this die they can be considered scarce.

It is difficult to estimate the scarcity with this die as probably no one has looked

before to see if this 1873 obverse die type continued after 1873 !
