GR 1840 B - Rev. B

GR 1840 B - Rev. B

GR 1840 C - Rev. C

GR 1840 C

GR 1840 A - Rev. A - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font.

The C is well rounded with a small gap at 3 o'clock.

GR 1840 B - Rev. B - All of the lettering of PENCE are normal font - except for the C.

.                                    The C is now broken and has a piece missing from 4 - 5 o'clock.

GR 1840 C - Rev. C  The centre bar of the E of PENCE is completely broken off.

The NCE have been repaired and double struck but the repairer

was unable or forgot to repair the E !

                                    * Seen only with the flat top 4 as per GR 1840 A

A possible explanation for the broken E & C in PENCE is that in 1824

the Royal Mint purchased from the Paris Mint an early type of copying

or reducing machine (une machine pour les Tours à Portrait) and

designers could now make large copies of their work with more detail

and accuracy and it could now be reduced down to the size required.

This reduction could in some cases could make some of the letters

nearly as thick as a coarse hair. The metal for making the dies were

not at their best in early Victorian as one can see from all the die

cracking one can see on these small coins.

Several 'master dies' had to be made from which 'working dies' could

be made from. It is more than possible that on one occasion the

'fine' centre bar of the E snapped off. At the time it was not noticed

but when it was it was deemed not necessary to repair the die and it

was abandoned and a new working die made.

The broken 'C' in PENCE die which I have found used from 1838 to

1848 due its use for 10 years I believe would have happened on a

'master die' rather than on a working die. The Mint would have

probably deemed, if they had even notice that a small fragment of

the die was broken on the C, that it was still totally serviceable as

a slightly more open 'C' rather than a more closed 'C'.

                                    * See 1838 for further reverse details
