1849 Reverse varieties

GR 1849 - Rev. A   PENCE  (Normal C)

GR 1849 - Rev. A (Normal C)

GR 1849 - Rev. A - All of the letters in PENCE are normal but fine in style.

                                 The C in PENCE is virtually circular except for the gap a 3 o'clock

                                 The tail or end section of the C is on the fine side.

                                 However, on worn coins ALL of the letters appear FATTER !

GR 1849 - Rev. B - NO examples of the broken tail of the C have as yet been found

                                  but this reverse has been kept in case examples are found.

                                  See 1848 varieties for the broken tail C & FATTER C.

GR 1849 C - PENCE (Double struck 1st E)

GR 1849 - Rev. C - The 1st E of PENCE is repaired &  double struck.

1849 Date varieties

All of the 1849 groats have the 18 of the date in a fixed position.

The position of the 49 can vary slightly as can the size of the font.

1849 - The 4 have been seen with slightly flat or pointed tops

           and with either a slant-up tail or a T bar tail.

* All Groats from 1840 to 1844 had a T bar tail.

* All Groats from 1845 to 1848 had a slant-up tail.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Slant-up tail 4's
GR 1849 - Date Type a
GR 1849 - Date: Type a   The top of the 4 is flat. The 4 has a slant-up tail
                              The 49 appears to be of a similar font size as the 18 - LARGE
                              All numerals are on the base line
GR 1849 - Date Type b
GR 1849 - Date: Type b   The top of the 4 is flat. The 4 has a slant-up tail
                              The 49 appears to be a slightly smaller font than the 18.
                              The 49 are just above the baseline.
GR 1849 - Date: Type c
GR 1849 - Date:  Type c: The top of the 4 now appears to be pointed over a flat top 4.
                               This I suggest is to possibly due to 4 being re-struck with a pointed
                                top 4. One can see the trace of a 2nd centre bar just above the 1st
                                centre bar - possible a slightly small different font 4 was used !?
                               The 4 has a slant-up tail
                               The 49 are similar in font size to Type b but on this example
                                the 8 & 9 have all been double struck.
                               The 9 is slightly narrower than the font used for Type b
                               The 9 appears to be taller but this is due to the double strike.
* All groats with Date: Type c have the 1st E of PENCE double struck (Type C)
Date: Type d - Has been left unused at present
 T-bar tail 4's
GR 1849 - Date: Type e - Larger numerals
GR 1849 - Date: Type e  The top of the 4 is flat.
                              The 4 has a T-bar tail
                              The 4 in this example is slightly double struck.
                              * Is a die flaw starting on the top of the 4 ??
                              The horizontal bar of the 4 is closer to the base of the numeral.
                              The 9 is fatter and has a well rounded back and tilts forward - slightly.
                              All numerals are large and on the base line.
                       * This example has a small die crack between the top of the 'ball' tail
                          of the 9 and the underside of the circular part of the top..
                         This should NOT to be considered as being a 9 over 8 !
GR 1849 - Date: Type f  - Large numerals (slimmer 9)
GR 1849 - Date: Type f  The top of the 4 is flat.
                              The 4 has a T-bar tail
                              The horizontal bar of the 4 is closer to the base of the numeral as per Type e.
                              The 9 is slimmer than Type e and tilts forward - very slightly.
                              None of the numerals appear to be double struck.
                              The 184 are on the base line. The 9 is slightly above.
Also seen with the 8 & 9 double struck and the 4 & 9 above & below the baseline !
as per the example shown below but NOT listed as a separate date type.
GR 1849  - Date: Type f  - Double struck 8 & 9
Type f - 9 over 9
GR 1849 - Date: Type g - (Taller slim pointed top 4)
GR 1849 Type g - date
GR 1849 - Date: Type g   The 4 has a T-bar tail and appears to be elongated - tall and slim.
                              *It is more probably due to a die flaw over a flat top 4 !
                               The horizontal bar is closer to the base of the numeral.
                               The 9 is slightly smaller and squat and is just above the baseline.
                               On this coin the rounded 'ball' end has been slightly squashed which
                               therefore making it look larger than it would normally be !
                            * And again. NO, it is not a 9 over an 8 !
                               The 184 are on the base line.
Triangular T-bar tail 4
GR 1849 - Date: Type h
GR 1849 - Date: Type h  The top of the 4 is flat. The 4 has a triangular T-bar tail.
                              The 49 appears to be of a similar font size as the 18.
                              The 9 has a well rounded back and is fatter across the centre.
                              All numerals are on the base line.
