For low grade Edward VII 3ds - see silver bullion
1912 to 1919
The Royal Mint had a great deal of trouble with the
Obverse die (George's head) as it was TOO bold in
relationship to the reverse and the sharpness of
George's head and hair wore down very quickly.
The other problem at that time was the shortage
of steel, just prior and during the 1st World War,
 which forced the dies into longer service.
Well struck mint specimens from initially sharp relief
dies are very scarce and extremely hard to come by.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Very few dealer's lists or auction houses will mention
the condition of the obverse head in the coin description,
of this period, whether the head or obverse is well struck,
of an average (medium) strike or is weakly struck.
I believe that it is something that needs to be mentioned
so that the collector can make an informed choice
when buying a coin and will not be disappointed when
they receive it. Hoping for a well struck obverse coin
and possibly only receive a weakly struck coin.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Obverse or head strike of the coin in NO way
effects the grade of the coin but could possibly effect
the price. Coins from 1916 to 1919 are dates that
are most effected, possibly due to the higher mintage
and that there are far more examples available.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Coins with well struck heads should command a
premium over weakly struck coins due to their
difficulty to obtain and their "eye" appeal.
Regardless of grade - pAS, EF+ or EF.
With lower grade coins it is difficult determine if the
obverse of the coin is wear or weakness of strike.
Many of the coins of this period the reverse could
be shown with a higher grade due possibly to the
quality of the head or obverse strike.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To show the difference in head or obverse strike
I have included a page to illustrate the differences
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The mintages from 1911 to 1915 are between
5.8 to 8.9 million. However, from 1916 to 1919
the mintages are 16.8 to 21.6 million.
These relatively coins are easy to obtain in high grade
but not easy to obtain with a strong head strike.
